Second half surge for New South Wales

first_imgBy BEN HARRISNew South Wales are one win away from claiming the men’s open division following a 10-7 victory against Queensland as the first games of the State of Origin series wrapped up on Friday night at Sunshine Coast Stadium.Boyed by seven touchdowns in the second half, New South Wales ran over the top of Queensland towards the end of the match to lead the three-game series 1-0.As expected, the match was fast, skilful and had the odd push-and-shove between opponents.In the opening three minutes the score was 3-1 to Queensland.Both teams scored in their first set of six of the match.Matthew Prowse had an early double for New South Wales as his team trailed by one touchdown after five minutes.The quick scoring subsided and was replaced by brilliant defence.New South Wales levelled the scores at 3-all in the 15th minute when Sam Brisby scored the first of his three touchdowns.But a minute before the break, Queensland hit the lead again when Shaun Francis was the beneficiary of quick hands to make the scores 4-3.Much like how the first half had started, the second stanza began with two touchdowns inside 90 seconds.Both were scored by New South Wales and the boys in blue had hit the lead for the first time.Four more touchdowns scored inside two minutes of each other had the scoreboard attendant calling for assistance as New South Wales blew the score out to 8-6 in their favour.Queensland’s Lachlan Pierce bagged his second for the night, which gave the home side some life but when Scott Buckley snatched an intercept and raced away to score, it was game over.New South Wales need to win one of the two matches on Saturday to take out the division.NEW SOUTH WALES 10 (Sam Brisby 3, Matt Prowse 3, Terry Deegan, Ben Moylan, Scott Buckley, Stuart Brierty touchdowns) def QUEENSLAND 7 (Shaun Francis 2, Lachlan Pierce 2, Theo Majid 2, Justin Mitchell touchdowns).
