HR- Circle: Ellison, Wellington: Dunn Wellington220142X1190 Game #1 Wellington 11 Circle 2 by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington boys baseball team kept its league title hopes alive with a doubleheader sweep against Circle Thursday at Sellers Park. The victory sweep improved the Dukes to 9-5 and 7-1 in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV. They are currently in a battle with Andale-Garden Plain for the league title.Freshman Cade Phelps in game two.The Indians are 5-1 and travels to Wichita Collegiate tonight. They will then play at Mulvane on May 7. Wellington hosts Clearwater on the same day.On Thursday, the Crusaders won the first game 11-2 and followed that up with a thrilling 3-1 victory in the nightcap.Wellington took advantage of four Circle errors while generating nine hits in game one. Austin Dunn also had himself a home run.Crusaders were in cruise control getting two runs in the first and two runs in the second. Eventually they held a 5-0 lead after four innings. The Thunderbirds would narrow the lead to two in the top of the fifth. But a four-run output in the bottom of the fifth secured victory for the Dukes. Trevor Nance was the winning pitcher striking out 10 Circle batters, while allowing just three hits and walking five.The second game did not come as easily for the Crusaders, who were in a defensive tussle.Wellington opened the game with a 2-0 lead with Connor Phelps and Wesley Gilmore scoring off Circle errors.Cameron Bartelson with the critical tag in the fifth.But scoring became a premium thereafter. In the fourth inning, Circle made its move and scored a run by Chase Ellison.Then in the fifth, Circle loaded the bases with one out. However, Wellington catcher Cameron Bartelson tagged the runner at third to prevent a score and Wellington left the top half of the inning still clutching to a 2-1 lead.The bottom half of the inning had an interesting sequence in which Wesley Gilmore had rounded to second but then got caught in a rundown between second and third with two outs. How he escaped that situation was an act of Houdini. In his race back to second base he escaped a near Circle tag. In fact the Thunderbirds were running back to the dugout when the umpire called him safe.Wesley Gilmore escapes a rundown.Nance would then bat him home to make it 3-1. Nobody scored in the final two innings.Freshman Cade Phelps was the winning pitcher in game two. He allowed six hits, but no walks, and strikeout eight in 6.1 innings pitched. Adam Condit came in relief in the final inning.Wellington, which was plagued with errors on Monday against Buhler, was errorless Thursday.
