We played like schoolboys and didn’t play.“We weren’t good technically, whereas they all sat back. I worry about the heads of my players as we’ve struggled in our last few games.“Since my first day here, the club have asked me to qualify for the Champions League. It’s difficult, but we’re fourth at the moment.“We must make as little mistakes as possible, but there’s no problem on my part. I’m not thinking about being hunted.“I’m calm and I just think about working. John Calipari Tom IzzoJohn Calipari and Tom Izzo were together at an event to fight cancer at the Oakland Hills Country Club on Monday. During the event, put together by Oakland coach Greg Kampe, the Kentucky and Michigan State coach spoke with reporters. Recruiting came up. Calipari, who’s notorious at this point for being the best recruiter in the country, said Izzo has beaten him for prospects “way more than I’ve beaten him.” Izzo reacted appropriately. Here’s the full conversation, courtesy of the Lansing State Journal. Perhaps Izzo was beating out Calipari for recruits when the Kentucky coach was at Memphis, but it seems pretty crazy for him to say Izzo’s beaten him “way more than I’ve beaten him.” [LSJ]

After a relatively easy group stage, the U.S. women’s national team has come through a gauntlet to reach the World Cup final. The U.S. has defeated Spain, France and then England in the knockout stage, all by a 2-1 scoreline. It hasn’t been easy, as Jill Ellis’s side has struggled at various points to get through all three formidable European opponents. But as the USWNT seemingly always does these days, they found a way to win. Now, a fourth European opponent in a row, the Netherlands, is the only thing standing between them and a second straight World Cup title. Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare After getting through the host nation France and a powerhouse English side, a final against the Netherlands may seem slightly anticlimactic. But the Dutch, who have won all six of their games at this tournament, are no slouch.“Netherlands is a great team and they are at the top of their game right now,” U.S. midfielder Rose Lavelle said. “We don’t take them lightly at all.”Though they perhaps aren’t as strong as the English and French, the Oranje are champions of Europe, having won the title in 2017 in just their third appearance at the tournament. “We’ve seen firsthand the last three games what it’s like to try to go through Europe like that,” Megan Rapinoe said. “It’s very difficult, the quality is so high and for them to be champions of Europe and to have that sort of pedigree and experience under their belt, they’re a great team for sure.”Still, the U.S. are heavily favored to win in Lyon on Sunday and clinch their fourth World Cup title overall. But that doesn’t mean that Ellis’s side are going to take their opponents lightly, despite some charging them with overconfidence and even arrogance at this World Cup.“I don’t think we ever underestimate anything,” U.S. defender Kelley O’Hara said. “I think that’s what people project onto us.”O’Hara and her teammates have consistently pushed back against being called arrogant, insisting that the term is hurled at them mostly due to their confidence and winning track record. “We know other teams can compete with us so it’s not like we feel invincible,” Lavelle said. “We’re just confident in what we’re putting out on the field.”The Dutch, in just their second World Cup, can be safely filed in the “happy to be here” category, though that certainly doesn’t preclude them from being able to pull off one of the great upsets in the sport’s history.“They’re a massive team, they have massive players, obviously we know that they’re the biggest team,” Netherlands midfielder Jackie Groenen said of the USWNT, “but I can’t wait to play them and who knows what can happen.“I think we have to play our own kind of football. If we can manage that, we can beat them.”If the Netherlands do pull off a shock and add a world championship to go along with their European title, they will need to execute their game plan to perfection.“This is a team that wants to have the ball and get in a good shape and wear you down with their passing game,” Ellis said. “They have a good variety, meaning they’ll look to get in behind immediately and they’ll look to play in front of you.”Even if they do produce a good performance, it may not be enough for the Dutch, who, despite their underdog status, will not encounter a team that’s taking them lightly.“They’re one of the top teams in the world and they’re playing in a World Cup final,” U.S. midfielder Lindsey Horan said. “I think it’s going to be a great game.”

I really can’t wait to get started again with this club and do everything I can to help my team-mates.”Rodgers also weighed in on the transfer, stating that the acquisition of such a talented player speaks volumes of the club’s ambitions.”I’m delighted that Youri has chosen to be part of Leicester City’s journey,” the manager said. “It’s an incredibly exciting time for this football club and to be able to bring players of Youri’s quality here is an indication of the hunger for success we have here.”Youri fit brilliantly into the squad last season, he’s already shown that he’s capable of making an impact in the Premier League and he adds another option to an incredibly talented group of players here at Leicester City.”Capped by Belgium 23 times, the first of those coming back in 2016, Tielemans was part of the country’s 2018 World Cup squad that finished third in Russia. The Anderlecht youth product will now join up with the rest of his new team-mates in France, where the Foxes are undergoing a training camp as they prepare for the 2019-20 Premier League season.

(Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images)Nebraska spring football began on March 4. Last week. the school had its spring break, which meant a bit of time in the middle of the session for the players to unwind. The older Huskers on the team had different plans, though. As spring break came to a close, they texted the team, calling for a captain’s practice over the weekend. That meant players had to cut off their vacations early. After a 4-8 season, I can’t imagine too many objections though. The call came from defensive lineman Damian Jackson, a former Navy SEAL, and naturally, one of the more respected guys on the team.Scott Frost is thrilled that so many players came back to get the second half of Nebraska spring football off to a fast start. From the Lincoln Journal Star:As Darrion Daniels, another senior defensive lineman, recounts it, the mass text to the team from Jackson read something like this, “Hey y’all, we went 4-8 last year, we don’t have the luxury to enjoy a full spring break so make sure you guys cut it off halfway through the week and then get back early so we can get in some good work.”That led to a Sunday captains’ practice before official work began again Monday morning on the tail end of spring break.“I wasn’t just happy, I was thrilled with the way the guys came back,” Frost said, making note of the players-only practice. “They handled spring break, there are 100 things that could happen on spring break, we all know that. … We had an intense fast practice on Monday and it looked like they hadn’t left or missed a step.Frost praised the team’s maturity, and compared it to last year, when he said the team experienced a dip in performance at the middle of spring.Entering year two, after a disappointing season, the Huskers won’t be hurting for motivation this fall.[Lincoln Journal Star]
