Distinguishing between Types of Domestic Violence

Lebanon, NH: Northeastern University Press.Michael P. Johnson (2008), in his book A typology of domestic violence: Intimate terrorism, violent resistance, and situational couple violence, highlights various types of domestic violence and the relationship dynamics involved in each.  The book also attempts to dismantle over-generalizations that occur when research on domestic violence looks at it as a single phenomenon. Johnson adds:“Family violence theorists, studying primarily situational couple violence, insist that women are as violent as men in intimate relationships; they present evidence from general survey to back up their theoretical arguments (p. 3)” [1].When no consideration is placed on the possibility that two different phenomenon are being researched– situational couple violence and intimate terrorism—results can provide a muddled picture of domestic violence. Johnson proposes that looking at domestic violence from a more holistic, typological framework sheds light onto what we know and don’t know–or need to continue researching.What does this mean for Military Professionals?Different types of domestic violence call for different types of prevention and intervention strategies, as evidence points to different causes connected to the various types. Understanding various types of domestic violence, and subsequent relationship dynamics connected to these types, can better equip us to work with couples and families. Change Occurs When You Reach Threshold

first_imgThe status quo is a warm bath; it’s soothing and comfortable. Change is a cold shower; it’s surprising, shocking, and uncomfortable.Is it any wonder your dream clients aren’t excited to change? Even when they have good reason to change, they often seek the safety and comfort of the status quo. When things aren’t going well, at least they know the status quo. Change means venturing off into the scary unknown.Do you ever wonder why your clients aren’t interested in change even when the reasons to change are crystal clear to you? Do you wonder why your ideas aren’t compelling?People only seek change when they reach some threshold. Either there is so much dissatisfaction that change becomes the safest path forward, or there is an opportunity so great that it warrants abandoning the status quo (a positive form of dissatisfaction). But until that threshold is met, in one direction or the other, change is unlikely.Building Towards ThresholdIf you want to make the case for your change, you have to help your clients reach threshold.If your client should be dissatisfied, you build to threshold by helping them understand what not changing is costing them now, what it will cost them in the future, and why they can’t afford to stay where they are. On the far end of this continuum is survival; there is nothing so motivating as your own impending doom. Survival is the most serious threshold of all. But losing your competitive advantage, falling behind your competitors, and losing market share can be threshold events, too.You can build to threshold for positive changes, too. Even if things are going well, you can build towards the threshold that brings change by showing your client what is still possible, how change will better position them in the future, and what they are losing by not acting now. Faster growth now, the ability to capitalize on opportunities, or seizing a competitive advantage in the marketplace can all be threshold events. So can even greater profitability.You don’t have to build towards threshold with bold, challenging statements. In fact, making the case this way can often lead to more resistance–it can seem self-serving. You can make the case more effectively with well designed and well placed questions.If you want your product, service, or solution to be compelling, it has to help your clients get to threshold.QuestionsLook at the existing opportunities in your pipeline. Can you identify the threshold that is compelling your client to change?How urgently does your client need to change? What do they lose by holding on to the status quo?Which stakeholders haven’t yet (or won’t easily) reach threshold? How do you make a stronger case for them (or build a stronger case around them)? Kidswear market to touch Rs 58K cr by 2014

Driven by huge demand from brand conscious children, the Indian kidswear retail market is expected to touch Rs 58,000 crore by 2014, according to retail consultancy firm Technopak Advisors.At present, the size of kidswear market in India is estimated at about Rs 38,000 crore – accounting for 25 per cent of the total Indian apparel category.”This segment, which is split into kidswear and school uniforms, is expected to reach Rs 58,000 crore by 2014,” Technopak’s recent report ‘Trends in India’s Domestic Fashion Market’ says.Growing at the rate of 17 per cent, this is one of the most attractive categories, according to the report. The report tracks children in the age group of three to 13 years.Technopak highlights increased media exposure, double-income parents and peer pressure as the reasons for children becoming more fashion and brand conscious.Kids are aware of branded goods and have started asking for exclusive products, the report says.Brands are also realising the potential of this market and are increasing their presence in this segment, it adds.In April 2009, the Mahindra Group launched Mom & Me stores to tap into this segment. Exclusive children’s brands, such as Gini & Jony, Lilliput and Catmoss, have also expanded their presence exponentially in the last two to three years.These brands are developing categories such as infant wear, kids’ formal wear, kids’ ethnic wear, swim wear and casual wear, along with a wide range of other merchandise for children.Even a brand like Reebok, which focused on adults till now, launched the ‘Reebok Juniors’ concept store last year to tap into this segment. It has started offering apparel, footwear, accessories and sports equipment for children in the age group of four to 14 years.Gini & Jony started their Freedom Fashions stores, which offer licensed products from brands like Reebok and Levi’s, along with their own products.Even premium brands, such as Tommy Hilfiger, Allen Solly and Puma, are not far behind and are now including more kids’ product and accessories.Childrens’ fashion shows, organised by these brands, is not a new concept. The lampshades, fashioned out of translucent fabric, mimic the delicate garlic casing while the pedestal is a roughly-hewn piece of teak wood.The Lehsoon lamps are fashioned from fabric and teakThe National Institute of Design (NID) graduate’s other muses are equally eclectic. He claims to be inspired by the Shakers, an 18th century religious group founded in England, local Gujarati artisans called kakas and even charming doll’s houses. Inevitably, this 33-year-old’s creations reflect his varied influences while celebrating individuality and technique.Mannan believes that beauty and functionality go hand in hand. As a result, his line of furniture and lifestyle products bear the unmistakable stamp of originality while addressing practical concerns. The designer’s miniature collection is made out of salvaged scraps of woodThough imaginative, the young designer likes to steer clear of over-the-top ornamentation. Instead, he loves to play around with natural textures and shapes while crafting his products.At his Dhaka studio, you can browse through the Mangrove Collection which sings paeans to untreated wood. The series is noted for its spartan chairs, tables and recliners with grainy, unpolished surfaces. “I am mostly inspired by the natural world. When in doubt, I try and draw parallels from nature to come up with a solution,” he says by way of explanation.Despite possessing a bare-bones aesthetic, all his furniture pieces exude personality. And yes, his designs are a far cry from heavily-embellished items that populate most urban living spaces. “A lot of my recent creations take inspiration from Shaker furniture that rarely sported elaborate details,” says the maverick.Over his decade long career, Mannan has worked with sundry materials but it is wood that ticks all his design checkboxes. “My first and only love is wood, Burma teak to be more specific. It has beautiful grains, the sweetest fragrance and is very forgiving too,” he explains.Reconfiguring familiar shapes is Mannan’s forte. So his Library Collection has curved racks in vibrant tones instead of conventional straight-lined shelves. Cocking a snook at tradition, the designer has also come up with a miniature line of furniture with thumb-sized beds, tables and dressers that are just right for a doll’s house. “I salvaged scraps of wood and set out to make miniatures. At that scale you really begin to understand the material better and when you revert to actual scale, you start being more precise,” he elaborates on his style, adding that his next step would be to make entire dollhouses, down to the last little detail.The Time Tree installation, made for Wipro, combines wires and clocksNo stranger to the world of unorthodox shapes and proportions, Mannan has a unique way of functioning. He barely sketches on paper anymore. When an idea strikes, he rushes to his workshop, starts drawing on a piece of wood and eventually executes the design. All his creations are handcrafted and retailed through his website.But this avant-garde designer, who employs traditional wood-crafting techniques in new ways, also has a knack for fashioning thematic interiors. He started a firm called Bent by Design in 2007 with Hidish Salam, a furniture designer from Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, and T.When an idea strikes Mannan, he executes the design without drawing on paperKuldeep, another alumnus from NID. Since then, the trio has worked on different platforms of design. But the jewel in the label’s crown is the futuristic experiential space in the Wipro campus, Bangalore. From an installation made out of clocks and colourful cables titled Time Tree to lines replicating race tracks, the space is built around a Formula 1 theme.”The F1 pit stop has been used as a metaphor for speedy customer service,” explains the designer.Just like the sport, design, according to Mannan, is synonymous with play.
