17 May 2011 Simon trailed France’s Gwladys Nocera by one shot heading into the third and final round after rounds of 66 and 67 had left her on 11-under-par. Nocera had led by two shots from Simon, fellow South African Stacey Lee Bregman and Australian Sarah Kemp after the first round. ‘I just had to play my own game’Interviewed by the Ladies European Tour (LET) afterwards, Simon said: “The conditions were very difficult this morning, a lot of wind, and I knew I just had to play my own game. She sank four birdies and carded one bogey over the outward nine and followed that up with a further four birdies, as well as two bogeys, over the inward nine to end with an astonishing eight birdies over the last 18 holes. Birdie spreeNeeding to make up only one shot in the final round, Simon responded with a birdie spree, littered with the occasional bogey, to pull comfortably clear. Reflecting on her second LET title, Simon said: “It’s basically exactly four years ago since I had won. I was 18 at the time, very young, and I’ve been working hard for about a year-and-a-half now, so it feels very rewarding.” South African golfer Ashleigh Simon closed with a superb five-under-par 67 in tough, windy conditions to win the ISPS Handa Portugal Ladies Open by three shots at CampoReal Resort and Spa near Lisbon on Sunday. Young South African Connie Chen, aged just 18, was a victim of the difficult conditions on the last day, tumbling to a six-over 78, to finish tied for 38th on five-over-par 221. With rounds of 66, 67 and 67, Simon finished on 16-under-par 200. Nocera posted rounds of 64, 68, and 71 to claim second on 13-under 203. It was the second professional victory of the 22-year-old’s career. Her first came in only her third tournament as a pro at the 2007 Catalonia Ladies Masters in Spain. “I was six ahead with three to play and I dropped at 16 and Gwladys birdied so all of a sudden it [the lead] went to four [shots], but then, after the birdie on 17 and the drive down 18, I knew that it [the title] was mine.” ‘I putted well’She pinpointed her short game as the reason for her success, saying: “I think my short game really saved me. I putted well and when I had to make the up-and-downs I did.” “I started off with a birdie, which is always a good thing, and I just played really solidly throughout the day and kept steady and wasn’t really watching leaderboards or worrying what Gwladys (Nocera) was doing. Simon also said she felt comfortable throughout the event because the conditions were similar to those back home in South Africa. It was a spectacular effort in testing conditions, a fact which was underlined by the fact that Nocera and Bregman’s 71s, four shots worse off than Simon, were the second best rounds of the final day, during which many players ballooned to well over par. For Nocera, the final round went awry from the start with successive bogeys, but she fought back well to finish under-par for the day. Bregman sixthStacey Lee Bregman was let down by a 73 in the second round, but bookended that effort with solid rounds of 66 and 71 to finish in sixth place along with England’s Georgina Simpson on six-under-par 210. Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest With another spring planting season upon us, there are a few planter considerations before heading to the field. Seed costs remain a significant investment today with planting being a critical if not most important for maximizing yield potential. Maximum yield exists when the seed is in the bag but is influenced by the ability of the planter to create a suitable seedbed, while providing good soil-to-seed contact at the proper depth without sidewall compaction. Mistakes made at planting only reduce yield potential. Variations in seed metering and seed depth placement can impact uniformity of emergence and final stand counts. While some precision technology can be costly and prove difficult to determine ROI, here are some thoughts on technologies that can quickly, in most cases less than one year, pay off on your farm. First, we will provide some comments about planter and meter setup.A key maintenance step is to have all your meters evaluated on a test stand annually. Whether new, old or never evaluated, testing your meters will help ensure proper setup and identify worn parts that may influence seed placement in the furrow. Small repairs or adjustments can greatly improve meter performance for any type of meter. Typically there are always a few meters that need to be adjusted or worked on each year and one should expect a 98% or better singulation on the test. Here are a few key checks:Planter Related1) Check all chains and sprockets, replace as needed. All chains should be adjusted to the proper tension. Grease and oil before heading to the field plus regularly during the planting season.2) Check your seed opening disks for wear and proper spacing. Measure diameter and replace if too worn as outlined in operator’s manual.3) Check bushings in parallel linkages that connect units to the maintain toolbar. Loose units will influence seed depth and fertilizer placement.4) Depth wheels need to run tight against seed opening disks. Remember depth or gauge wheels control planting depth, so look them over and make sure they are properly setup.5) Check seals on meter to insure door seals correctly and meter outlet properly aligns with seed tube.6) Check the wear and cracks on bottom of seed tube. Cracks and wear at the bottom impact the uniformity of seed spacing.7) Look over row cleaners, checking for wear. Properly adjust height and remember row cleaners are intended to remove stover and residue out of the way for the opening disks and not to till the soil bed.8) Check closing wheels to insure they have the proper spring setting. They should not be loose or excessively tight. Also, check clearance as listed within operator’s manual. Technology related1) Make sure your GPS and display are up-to-date on their firmware.2) Make sure GPS offsets and planters offsets are correct so proper clutching of rows takes place.3) Back-up and archive past years planting data in a secure location on a farm computer, external hard drive, cloud site, or similar.4) If purchasing a differential correction, make sure your subscription is up-to-date for the planting season.5) Check over wiring harnesses and connectors for any damage or loose connections.6) If your system allows complete a backup of machinery setup digitally on flash drive or write down setting it case of display failure. This insures that setup of a new display can happen quickly without having to go through every setup process again causing more down time. Lastly, mobile application or APPs today can be a valuable tool or resource during planting. Always have a good weather APP to refer to during the season but the following list represents a few APPs that may be useful to your operation. Planting Population and Corn Spacing provide quick calculations to checking seed spacing at the time you are checking seed depth in the soil. You can at least determine if the planted spacing is being met.Mobile Pioneer by PioneerPlantability by PioneerPlanting Pop by AgPhDField Guide by AgPhDClimate Fieldview by the Climate CorporationGoPlant by John DeerePlanter Plus by John DeereOhio State PLOTSThe list provided is not all-inclusive, but many APPs exist that can be an asset during planting. Holladay also questions Rossn’s intent to connect radon piping to his perimeter drainage system.“In general, you don’t want to connect a radon mitigation system to any pipe that leads to daylight or is connected to the open air unless the ‘daylight’ pipe has a check valve,” he says. “Check valves can fail, so that’s sub-optimal. I’m not sure about the connection in your case — but separate radon piping connected to the sub-slab crushed stone layer is best, without sharing drainage piping.” Addressing radon in older housesFor retrofits, Rossn says the usual approach in his area is to punch a hole in the slab, insert a pipe and install a fan on the pipe. The sump is often the first choice for a point of entry. If that doesn’t lower radon levels sufficiently, a mitigation specialist might add a second point from which to draw sub-slab air, seal seams and cracks, or add a more powerful fan. He refers GBA readers to an EPA brochure on reduction strategies.“In my case, I do have about 20 feet cut in my slab for relocation of a bathroom and am extending some gravel from it to the sump,” Rossn says. “My challenge is that I’m adding the dimple mat, which would come close to the surface, and serve as a potential leak point.”But that shouldn’t necessarily be an issue, Holladay replies.“Dimple mat is usually terminated at the top with a horizontal termination strip or flashing (as my recent article explains), so it shouldn’t be too hard to perform air sealing work at the top of the dimple mat before the termination strip is installed,” Holladay says. “I think you’ll be OK. Of course, you’ll need to measure the radon level in the first floor of your house after the work is complete. In the unlikely event that the radon level is still high, you’ll need to call in a certified radon abatement contractor for advice.”Jon R agrees with Holladay, noting that if the dimple mat is sealed tightly to the foundation wall with EPDM, there isn’t much of an air leakage path, other than through lots of soil. RELATED ARTICLES Radon risksRadon is a real issue in the area where Rossn lives.“In Colorado, you almost don’t even need to measure it to estimate that the test will be above the EPA’s recommended remediation level,” writes Dana Dorsett, referring Rossn to a state map showing where radon levels are likely to be high. “Pick a county, any county.”Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, causes some 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the U.S. In high risk areas, pipes are often installed below the basement slab where they collect radon before it gets into the house. An inline fan installed on the main stack vents the radon to the outside. In Rossn’s case, footing drain lines on the south and west side of the house also serve as part of the radon mitigation system. The fan for the system has been installed in the shed (see Image #2 below). But now that Rossn is using dimple mat to help control water on the outside of the foundation wall he worries the radon collection system won’t work, or at least won’t work very well. The house dates from the 1960s, so there is no radon piping or vapor barrier underneath the slab.“Dana’s about right,” Rossn adds. “Radon was around 7-8 picocuries per liter originally [about double the EPA’s recommended action limit], and around 4 picocuries per liter after remediation, but now I’m tightening up the house.” Best spot for foundation drains?Rossn adds that a member of the excavation crew he’s working with says it’s typical for engineers to specify that holes in the foundation drain lines be located below the bottom of the footing, but not in compressed soil. Soil would be sloped down and away from the bottom of the footing, with at least 60% of the fill being sand.“My own opinion is that the drainage holes on the footing drain pipes have to be below the level of the slab, but the drainage holes don’t have to be below the bottom of the footing,” Holladay says. “You’ll hear lots of opinions on this issue. GBA published an article on the topic a while back called “How to Install a Foundation Drain.” Some changes to considerGBA Editor Martin Holladay finds Rossn’s approach sound, but he suggests two modifications.“Your underground roof is a little close to the surface,” he says. “Either erosion or a curious dog digging a hole might expose the underground roof — so if site conditions allow, you might lower the underground roof.” How to Install a Foundation DrainAll About RadonRadon and AirtightnessGBA Detail: Retrofit for Radon VentUsing a Dimple Mat to Keep a Basement DryGreen Encyclopedia: Foundation Drains Rossn has been remodeling the lower level of his Colorado home and in the process discovered evidence of some moisture and bulk water issues. Although the problems are not severe enough to make the lower level a “wet basement,” Rossn has developed a plan to better manage water near the house, and solve a radon problem at the same time.In a Q&A post, Rossn outlines his approach in the drawing that appears on the right. His plan is to connect the radon mitigation system to the sump, and thus the perimeter footer drain, but he’s concerned that the dimple mat on the outside of the foundation will interfere by causing the system to lose suction.“I’m not sure the trench/French drain approach will work for me near the surface, given my soil is 60% sand and drains easily,” Rossn says. “I added a liner, though am not sure if that will work, and ultimately I’d tie it into the rest of the gutter system.”The perimeter drain is virtually flat and is as much as 110 feet from the sump. (A plan view of the project is reproduced as Image #2, below). Will this plan work? That’s the topic for this Q&A Spotlight. Our expert’s opinionPeter Yost, GBA’s technical director, had this to add:I just want to weigh in on the issue of airtightness and radon levels. New information has become available on this topic since I wrote this blog.In a 2014 study conducted for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, researchers evaluated more than 500 homes in 35 states, measuring radon levels in foundation spaces and first-floor living spaces before and after the houses were weatherized. The report makes several findings:Radon tests conducted after the houses were weatherized — that is, tightened up — found a “small, statistically significant” increase in radon levels. Nationally, the study suggests an average increase of less than 1 picocurie per liter (pCi/L).In houses that started with low levels of radon, the impact of weatherization was relatively small. In houses with higher levels of radon before weatherization the impact was greater.Higher levels of radon are relatively rare in mobile homes and in site-built homes in counties the EPA has identified as having low radon potential.Colder weather increases the stack-effect depressurization of basements and crawlspaces, which in turn sucks more radon into living spaces. On average, the overall effect of air sealing is a reduction in natural ventilation and proportionately higher indoor radon levels. The installation of a continuous mechanical ventilation system reduces radon levels.Keep in mind that the only way to know the impact of weatherization work on radon levels is to perform a radon test after the work is complete. Statistics only indicate probability — a specific home may be a statistical outlier. One other thought: Rossn (the homeowner who posted the question) is concerned that the perimeter drain has a long run. I would recommend adding clean-outs to the perimeter drainage system.
Kids wear is not a small business anymore. Driven by huge demand from brand conscious children, the Indian kidswear retail market is expected to touch Rs 58,000 crore by 2014, according to retail consultancy firm Technopak Advisors. At present, the size of kidswear market in India is estimated at about Rs 38,000 crore – accounting for 25 per cent of the total Indian apparel category.”This segment, which is split into kidswear and school uniforms, is expected to reach Rs 58,000 crore by 2014,” Technopak’s recent report ‘Trends in India’s Domestic Fashion Market’ says.Growing at the rate of 17 per cent, this is one of the most attractive categories, according to the report. The report tracks children in the age group of three to 13 years.Technopak highlights increased media exposure, double-income parents and peer pressure as the reasons for children becoming more fashion and brand conscious.Kids are aware of branded goods and have started asking for exclusive products, the report says.Brands are also realising the potential of this market and are increasing their presence in this segment, it adds.In April 2009, the Mahindra Group launched Mom & Me stores to tap into this segment. Exclusive children’s brands, such as Gini & Jony, Lilliput and Catmoss, have also expanded their presence exponentially in the last two to three years. These brands are developing categories such as infant wear, kids’ formal wear, kids’ ethnic wear, swim wear and casual wear, along with a wide range of other merchandise for children.Even a brand like Reebok, which focused on adults till now, launched the ‘Reebok Juniors’ concept store last year to tap into this segment. It has started offering apparel, footwear, accessories and sports equipment for children in the age group of four to 14 years.Gini & Jony started their Freedom Fashions stores, which offer licensed products from brands like Reebok and Levi’s, along with their own products.Even premium brands, such as Tommy Hilfiger, Allen Solly and Puma, are not far behind and are now including more kids’ product and accessories.Childrens’ fashion shows, organised by these brands, is not a new concept. Lilliput started this trend and Catmoss roped in Darsheel Safary, of Taare Zameen Par-fame, to walk the ramp for its collection.Courtesy: Mail Today advertisement

zoom Eight out of eleven seafarers, who were left in limbo in the port of Durban, South Africa after their ship was detained, are about to be repatriated. The 11 crewmembers from the tug/supply ship PSD2, detained following non-payment of wages, had not been paid for up to 15 months, according to the Catholic charity Apostleship of the Sea (AoS).The charity found out that the crew “were owed nine months’ wages; one hadn’t been paid for 15 months. Apparently the company kept delaying payment, promising to pay ‘next week’ but never doing so,” Fr Herman Giraldo, AoS Durban port chaplain, said.“Arrangements are being made for the vessel to be sold and the men are expected to get paid when this happens. The remaining crew (the master and two engineers) on board are not allowed to leave the port,” Giraldo added. The seafarers aboard the Tanzanian-flagged vessel were also in need of food and fresh water, while two crew needed medical attention. The ship, which arrived in Durban on December 10 from Mozambique, also had pest problems.AoS was able to secure an emergency grant of GBP 1,000 from the Guild of Benevolence of the IMarEST (The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology) for medical bills, food and sanitation.
