Regional officials strengthen partnership to fight crime

Photo: Tony Grant Jr NASSAU, Bahamas — The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other US agencies are working with Caribbean partners through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) to develop a fingerprint collection system that will help check criminals against terrorism and criminal databases, US Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said on Thursday.“Once this system is operational, we believe it will allow for sharing of information between the United States and participating Caribbean countries,” said Napolitano, who spoke at the 2nd Annual CBSI Caribbean-United States Security Cooperation Dialogue at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island. She outlined various initiatives — including aviation security training and anti-terrorism assessments — which she said are examples of strong, cooperative models that work, and that can be expanded and used to strengthen regional cooperation in other areas.“Ultimately, our success will hinge on how well we continue to work together within the framework of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative to advance our common goals.”Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, who also addressed the high-level gathering, said it was an important opportunity for regional leaders to act together to counter their countries’ continued vulnerability to transnational criminal activity, including drugs and arms trafficking, human smuggling, illegal immigration and money laundering. “The costs of the security measures we are required to take are daunting,” Ingraham said. “This is further complicated by the economic challenges generally faced by the region and now by the slow recovery from the global economic and financial crisis which continues to impact our own economies.”Ingraham expressed confidence that CBSI cooperation will measurably reduce transnational trafficking of all kinds.“The matters coming before this dialogue highlight the priorities to which our partnership will turn its attention in the year ahead: firearms controls, prison reform, juvenile justice and greater public and private sector and civil cooperation,” he said.“At the core of all our endeavours must be our commitment to the mutually supportive cooperative partnership we have established, that will foster greater regional coordination and ensure long-term sustainment of Caribbean-United States efforts.”The prime minister also acknowledged “a time-honoured” relationship between The Bahamas and the US Coast Guard in the area of search and rescue. He noted that on Wednesday night, a mail and passenger boat, the M/V Legacy, ran aground and was taking on water just off the coast of Abaco with 18 people including a child on board.Ingraham noted that it was determined that conditions would not permit a rescue by boat.He said only the US Coast Guard helicopter, dispatched from Andros, was able to rescue the nine crew and the nine passengers from the Legacy and transport them all to safety to Marsh Harbour, Abaco.Napolitano said that the Coast Guard and US government partners have committed to provide boats and related training to a number of Caribbean countries totaling $10.9 million to date.“In the future, we want to build on these efforts by working through the CBSI to improve our domain awareness in the Caribbean,” she said.“This increased collaboration may include sharing technology with partner countries, creating a system to share near real-time information about threats, and developing a maritime and air control strategy.“We also hope to work with you to create a new forum to share best practices and develop new tactics to counter drug trafficking and transnational criminal organizations.”By Candia DamesNassau Guardian News Editor Sharecenter_img Tweet Share 26 Views   no discussionslast_img read more

Dominica is opened for business on January 3rd, 2012

first_img Share Share LocalNews Dominica is opened for business on January 3rd, 2012 by: – December 7, 2011 Tweet Sharing is caring!center_img 86 Views   no discussions Share CEO of the DAIC, Achille Chris JosephThe Dominica Association of Industry & Commerce is once again putting its full support and advocacy behind open trading on the traditional “Merchants’ Holiday” this January 3rd, 2012.The DAIC has repeatedly advanced that “Merchants’ Holiday” is not a dies non in the Commonwealth of Dominica and, as such, any decision to close has to be at the determination of the employer. The Association is therefore advocating full trading on January 3rd, 2012. CEO of the DAIC, Achille Chris Joseph says, “Traditionally, the colonial employer closed to the public on January 2nd so that he could count his stock. In those days, businesses all ran a January to December fiscal year so it was necessary to confirm stock levels at the beginning of the year. Today, this is not a necessity. With the advent of electronic storage of inventory data, a business can know its stock at the push of a button. But quite apart from closing to the public, workers usually worked inside counting stock. So for many workers, it was not a holiday.”Speaking on the subject last year, Joseph, said, “Merchants’ Holiday in general and the fact that it falls on Sunday this time around may just be the opportune time for social partners to look at the totality of non-productive breaks in Dominica.” On reflection, he now says that the DAIC raised the debate in 2010 and invited social partners to contribute to a discussion on the relevance of “Merchants’ Holiday” and come to a consensus, but some commentators saw it as a fight and the ensuing exchange of words achieved nothing. The plethora of leave provisions in Dominica are already alarming and include the following:Every Sunday – 52 daysOther Public Holidays – 12 daysMinimum Vacation – 12 daysMaternity Leave – 72 daysCertified Sick Leave – 36 daysIndustrial Injury – 156 daysCompassionate Leave – 2 daysOther leaves provided for in industrial agreements include:Jury ServicesSporting ActivitiesPaternal LeaveUnion LeaveStudy LeaveFamily EmergenciesUncertified Sick Leave“How can we speak of productivity and competitiveness in an environment of such negative drivers?” the CEO continued.COMPETE DOMINICA!®Dominica Association of Industry & Commercelast_img read more

Aaron Wan-Bissaka divides family in Arsenal vs Man U clash

Wan-Bissaka grew up in a family of Arsenal fans and his father revealed he even used to call the now United right-back Thierry Henry when he was younger. But Wan-Bissaka will be aiming to get one over the Gunners and boost United’s top-four hopes at the Emirates following his £50m summer move to Old Trafford. ‘What’s more important, Arsenal winning or me playing well?’ Wan-Bissaka asked his dad Ambroise in a video released by his sponsors Adidas ahead of the New Year’s Day clash. Ambroise said: ‘You playing well because I like you, game by game, to improve and play well, not for Arsenal to win.’ ‘Good answer,’ Wan-Bissaka, 22, said. His older brother Kevin admitted: ‘See when you play against Arsenal, it’s going to be a sticky one for me. I’d take a draw.’Advertisement Promoted ContentTop 10 Tiniest Phones Ever MadeThe Very Last Bitcoin Will Be Mined Around 2140. Gattuso: Demme,Lobotka a boost to Napoli

first_imgNapoli coach, Rino Gattuso, says new signings Diego Demme and Stanislav Lobotka can help ‘’give a hand’’ to the Partenopei in the second half of the season. Loading… “Demme wasn’t the Leipzig captain for many years by chance. He’s a quality player who understands the game.” “We know what kind of player Lobotka is. He’s different from Demme, who plays with a maximum of two touches, Lobotka is similar to Marco Verratti, he carries the ball.” Gattuso revealed that he still has players unavailable due to injury. “Nikola Maksimovic is back today, Dries Mertens returned the other day, whilst with Kalidou Kolibaly it depends on what he tells us, but for now all three are still missing. “We miss Maksimovic and Koulibaly in defence.” Read Also:UCL: Napoli will face Barcelona ‘without fear’ – Gattuso Watch Serie A live in the UK on Premier Sports for just £11.99 per month including live LaLiga, Eredivisie, Scottish Cup Football and more. They run a lot,” said Gattuso in his press conference. “But for us what is important is this game and not to think about ahead to the games against Lazio or Juventus. We think only about three points and it will be very difficult.” Napoli have brought in Diego Demme from RB Leipzig and Stanislav Lobotka from Spanish side Celta Vigo, and Gattuso believes that both players can make an impact on their season. “Demme and Lobotka have fantastic quality on the ball. they can both help us out. Demme can play in a two-man midfield, whilst Lobotka can play as a mezzala with different characteristics, or in a defensive midfield role. “The quality of training has jumped a level, the ball now travels a lot faster.
