Electric cars have a long way to go before they can be considered a proper replacement for our gas guzzling vehicles. Two of the major roadblocks to their mainstream acceptance is the limited range such cars have on a single charge and the time it takes to recharge their batteries. The company leading the pack on electric car innovation is Tesla, and in a roundabout way they have already solved the whole charging issue. In fact, you can “refuel” a Tesla car quicker than it takes to pump a full tank of gas into a regular car. You can see how in the video below:Tesla has demonstrated the battery swapping system on a Model S to an audience that were obviously impressed. The whole process takes just 90 seconds, you don’t have to leave your car, and there’s no work involved for the driver. Of course, it relies on the battery changing system being installed along your route, but lets face it, when electric cars get popular these will probably be a standard feature at every gas station. There is a transport charge involved in using the battery swapping system, which as of yet hasn’t been specified. But the first such battery swapping pads are planned for installation at supercharger stations along California’s I-5, so the pricing should become public knowledge pretty soon.We still have a long way to go, but innovation like this certainly makes owning and driving an electric car a little bit more desirable. That first 90 second refuel in the pouring rain with you sat warm and dry inside the car is going to feel pretty awesome, isn’t it?
